Ladies and Gentlemen,
Thank you all for joining us today on the occasion of the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Just now, we have watched the documentary video clips showing the founding ceremony of the People's Republic of China. On October 1st 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong announced the founding of the People's Republic of China from atop Tiananmen. He proudly announced to the world, "The Chinese People, a quarter of the mankind, have now stood up." Every time I watch this video, I am deeply touched and would think of China's past and present, and feel very proud of my country.
In 1949, China achieved national independence and people's liberation through democratic revolution. The founding of New China completely changed the destiny of the Chinese nation.
Since the founding of the People's Republic of China 68 years ago and in particular since adoption of the reform and opening up policy nearly 40 years ago, China has blazed a successful path of development, the path of socialism with Chinese characteristic, and has made remarkable achievements. China has made strategic arrangements and set clear objectives for its future development, namely, to double its 2010 GDP and per capita income of its urban and rural residents and achieve the goal of finishing building a moderately prosperous society in all respects by 2021 when the Communist Party of China celebrates its centenary; to achieve the goal of building China into a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, and harmonious by 2049 when the People's Republic of China marks its centenary; and realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. These are the Two Centenary Goals China aims to achieve.
Since 1978, China has made remarkable progress with a sustainable, fast and healthy development of the national economy. For two decades, China's GDP has grown at an average annual rate of 9.4 percent. Now China has performed reform and opening up for almost 40 years. From 1978 to 2016, China's GDP increased from 216.8 billion US dollars to 11 trillion dollars, and its per capita GDP increased from 227 dollars to 8,000 US dollars, marking a world development miracle by lifting over 700 million Chinese people out of poverty. In recent years, the number of people living in poverty in rural areas was reduced by more than 10 million annually. By 2020, China will completely eliminate poverty across its 1.3 billion plus population.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said, the people's wish for a good life is our goal. Over the past five years, under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, the Chinese government put into practice President Xi's new vision, thinking, and strategies for China's governance, promote balanced economic, political, cultural, social, and ecological progress and coordinated implementation of the Four Comprehensive Strategy, which refers to "comprehensively" building a moderately prosperous society, deepening reform, governing the country according to rule by law, and enforcing strict party discipline. China put into practice the new development philosophy and steer the new normal in economic development. It has maintained its strategic focus, explored innovative ways of macro regulation, advanced supply-side structural reforms, and promoted economic transformation and upgrading, and has achieved sustained, healthy economic and social development.

Our friendship and cooperation with the Province of KZN is also fast growing. Economic and Trade exchanges and cooperation between Guangdong and KZN, the two sister provinces, are yielding good outcomes and bringing tangible benefits to both sides. A KZN trade delegation is currently in Dongguan participating in the 2017 Guangdong 21st Century Maritime Silk Road International Expo, I am sure they are enjoying their visit in China and will bring back more trade and investment opportunities.
