On 27 March 2020, The Star published a story of Sihle Mavuso on his interview to Consul General Fei Mingxing titled "Lockdown will help SA beat virus, says Chinese envoy". The full text is as follows:

China, the first country to be affected by the corinavirus (Covid-19) has told South Africa that the lockdown will help it beat the virus.

The words of encouragement from Fei Mingxing, the Chinese Consul-General in Durban came hours before the 21-day lockdown of the country began at midnight yesterday.

The Consul-General made the remark in Durban after his country had donated 100,000 surgical masks to the provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal to help it fight the virus.

Fei said the battle needed strong leadership, international support for the country and the use of advanced technology would be key.

Moreover, he said that people should also play a role as this was their battle and without them it could not be won.

"We think this (the lockdown) is one the the best ways to ensure that we defeat the virus and we are in full support of South Africa's government policy initiative. And we firmly believe South Africa is going to prevail over the virus," Fei said.

As the first country that had the virus, Fei said South Africa can learn a lot from the Chinese. Among the lessons that can be learnt from the Chinese was that "strong leadership as we have seen it now" is vital during the battle.

"Strong leadership, the people's solidarity... Using hi-tech gear as well as international support will be very important for the country to prevail over the virus," He added.

Fei also applauded the government for its massive awareness drive on the virus, saying that public education was key in this fight.

"When the people are mobilised and educated, then we are joined together to fight the virus. So it might take time but we need to trust the people, the people are the power against the virus," He said.

Fei also responded to US president Donald Trump, saying that instead of "smearing and blaming" others during the Covid-19 crisis, the world must unite.

"We should respect what the World Health Organisation has already said again and again. This is a virus against humanity, it's a virus against the people of the world. So we should be united against the virus instead of smearing and blaming, etc. Unite the whole world against the virus, that's the only way to defeat the virus," He said.
